How Four Materials Changed Our Lives for Good

The materials we use for better, healthier living

Here at Nummy, we’re committed to using materials that are safe for you and the planet.t’s one of the main reasons we started our company and a responsibility we don’t take lightly. This means you won’t find any plastic in our products. Instead, we focus on four sustainable, safe materials: silicone, stainless steel, glass, and bamboo. Let’s break down why each of these materials is better for you and the planet.

Silicone

What’s as flexible and durable as plastic, yet won’t clog up landfills or leach dangerous chemicals into your food or water system? Silicone!

While silicone is still a synthetic material and not 100% natural, it’s a much safer and longer-lasting alternative to plastic. We use platinum cured silicone because it’s the safest form and is free of the dangerous chemicals used in conventional plastic production:

  • BPA
  • BPS
  • BPF
  • PVC
  • Lead
  • Cadmium
  • Phthalates
  • Formaldehyde
  • PAHs
  • Nitrosamines

When you put our silicone products in the microwave or dishwasher you don’t have to worry -  they don’t leach chemicals into your food or microplastics into the water. You can serve up a meal with confidence, knowing the only thing on your little one’s plate is the food you put there.

Silicone is also 100% recyclable at the end of its life. though be advised that your local recycling company may or may not accept silicone. Some local companies are don’t yet accept silicone, but you can always you can mail your ready-to-recycle silicone back to us and we will take care of it for you.

Glass

You probably already know and love glass, and we do too. It’s made of sand, infinitely recyclable, and our borosilicate glass is oven safe up to 520°F as well as dishwasher, microwave, and freezer safe. The main challenges with glass are that it breaks more easily than plastic, though our borosilicate glass is less prone to breakage, and it’s heavy to ship. It can last a lifetime, and once it’s ready to move on it can be recycled again and again into new products. It releases no harmful byproducts into your food or the earth, either.

We use borosilicate glass in our products. We won’t bore you with all the science, but essentially, this form of glass is higher in silica and boron trioxide. This means that the glass is more resistant to thermal shock (a.k.a., can withstand higher temperatures) than typical glass— which is why you can put our glass containers into the oven. We took great care in selecting a factory to produce our glass as well. It runs on all-electric machines, which means no wastewater or CO2 emitted, and ensures the safety and wellbeing, as well as higher than average pay and benefits.

Bamboo

We use bamboo lids for our containers, and in addition to how lovely they look, they are also sustainable and safe. Our bamboo lids are strong and durable, as well as plastic-free, BPA free and phthalate-free. Most importantly, they are compostable at the end of their life. We know some bamboo products are controversial in terms of their sustainable harvesting, so we took care to source bamboo that harvested in the Zhejiang province of China without pesticides, which is better for the workers and you as a consumer. We also ensure that the glue that is used in our bamboo products is formaldehyde-free, and the final product is finished with natural soybean oil.

Stainless steel

Our stainless steel is 18/10— meaning it’s 10% nickel and 18% chromium, making it less likely to corrode! We love stainless steel because, like glass, it’s infinitely recyclable with no degradation. That means that when it’s no longer of use for you, it can be made into something else, and it's highly durable. As for health, stainless steel is considered one of the safest materials to use in the kitchen. Some are concerned with the leeching of nickel in certain products, but since our stainless steel products aren’t for cooking with, we feel confident that they are a healthy and safe product for you and your family!

As we continue to grow and offer new products, we are committed to using these four sustainable materials, and if we stray from these materials, finding others as healthy for you and the planet.

People Love Nummy

It is nice to see a well-made product that is PLASTIC FREE and easy to store, stack, and most importantly, use in the over or microwave…certainly beats heating up plastic!

This suction is amazing. Best suction bowl I have tried so far. Love that it is also dishwasher safe but cleans easily by hand and have had no staining issues even after spaghetti residue left in the bowl overnight.
